The U.S. Coast Guard in New Orleans reports a blowout at an offshore rig in the Gulf this morning. Spokesman Petty Officer Carlos Vega says it happened on a rig located about 55 miles south and east of Grand Isle. He says 47 persons have been successfully evacuated from an adjacent jack-up rig.

The unmanned rig is owned by Walter Oil & Gas, and designated as Well A-3. It's located in about 154 feet of water. The evacuated personnel were on the Hercules 265 jack-up next to it. Vega says the well is currently flowing natural gas, but no oil is being released. The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement is overflying the rig site, and monitoring Walter Oil & Gas' response efforts bring the well under control. Vega says none of the 47 persons evacuated were injured.
