Pastor Protection Act dies in Senate committee

On a 3-2 vote a Senate committee voted against the Pastor Protection Act, which would have provided protection for religious organizations if they refuse to perform a same sex marriage. Bossier City Representative Mike Johnson says this bill is NOT as expansive as some of the religious freedom bills passed in other states.

The House Civil Law Committee has passed the “Pastor Protection Act” today on a 7-3 vote. The bill would allow ministers and clergy members to refuse to conduct a same sex marriage. Lester Perryman, with the Human Rights campaign, questions why Louisiana needs this legislation.

The House Civil Law Committee will hear testimony today on the “Pastor Protection Act,” which would allow a clergy member or religious organization to deny participation in a same sex marriage. Author of the bill, Bossier City Representative Mike Johnson, says the bill is a basic measure of protection and a harmless piece of legislation.

North Louisiana lawmaker proposes the Pastor Protection Act

A bill has been introduced in the current regular legislative session to allow a religious organization or clergy member to refuse participation in a same sex marriage. Author of the Pastor Protection Act, Bossier City Representative Mike Johnson, says the bill simply protects an individual’s religious belief.
