The city of Hammond has gone Lion crazy and a pep rally is being held this morning in anticipation of the Lions' first playoff game on Saturday. The contest in Strawberry Stadium will be against SLU Southland Conference foe, Sam Houston State. University President Dr. John Crain says the excitement in the city is off the charts.

"I've never seen anything like this that has brought the community and the university together," Crain said.

The event today will include drawings for t-shirts, tickets to the game courtesy of the Alumni Association and other giveaways.

Dr. Crain says this rally is being held for SLU students, faculty & staff and the community to say thanks for showing so much support for the Lions this season.

"The coaches tell us that's been such a tremendous part of the game," says Crain. "When they're on the home field and there are so many students there, fans and other supporters."

The appreciation tailgate and pep rally will be held during lunchtime today at the Southeastern War Memorial Student Union Park.

Dr. Crain says he is extremely proud of the SLU football program, teams and coaches for how far they have come this season.

"This is such a great thing for the school and for all of our fans and alumni and students and everyone who is interested and excited about what's going on at Southeastern," Crain said.
